I just finished reading The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. I’d probably give this book a 3.5 of 5 stars. While it had great information, there was a lot of fluff that I feel like could have been left out.
One thing I really loved was this quote:
“I have an idea of who I wish I were, and that idea obscures my understanding of who I actually am.”
After reading this quote, I put my book down and took a few minutes to think about things I really, truly enjoy. What makes ME happy. My own happiness project, if you will. (For the sake of this post, I was trying to list hobbies that make me happy–not people or things or events.)
I have to admit, it was extremely tough. I think I am natually a pretty happy person. I am most definitely a people-person and so I tend to enjoy LOTS of things, as long as my people are around. So my criteria was to list things I enjoy doing so much that I would do them alone.
On my list:
Reading
Writing/Blogging
Traveling
Not on my list:
Shopping/Fashion
Home decor
Cooking
Why is this important? Because it helps me know who I am. Before, I might get up and attempt to redecorate my house for fun. But that’s not fun for me and I didn’t really realize it until reading Gretchen’s book.
My challenge for you: stop and think for a few minutes. Make a list of 3 things you enjoy, even if you are alone. Then make a list of at least one thing you would like to enjoy or thought you enjoyed, but really don’t. Then share them in the comments.
