You guys, this weekend could be called “The One With All The Pageants.” Seriously, we attended not one but two school beauty pageants.
Generally, I am not a fan of beauty pageants. I think the whole idea of judging a girl on her ‘beauty’ by a two minute walk across a stage is preposterous. There are many other pageant-type events that are so good (Junior Miss, for example), include more than just a walk across the stage, and offer scholarship money to the winners.
The girls have been begging to enter our school’s beauty pageant for several years now. I kept putting them off and finally gave in this year. And then spent the weeks leading up to the pageant reiterating to the girls that this is all for fun. It doesn’t matter who wins and who doesn’t, it’s about the getting ready.
It’s about wearing makeup and curling your hair and getting all dressed up.
It’s about letting Aunt Mal be your stylist while Trey feeds her a hamburger.
It’s about having GraGra tie the bow on your dress because she is way better at that than your mom.
It’s about smiling and laughing and having a blast strutting your stuff on stage in front of all the girls’ families.
And dang it if every single one of the girls in this pageant weren’t beautiful. Exquisitely so.
Kyndall was awarded third alternate. Her friend Maddie was crowned Little Miss Rebel. (See what I mean about all that exquisite beauty? And you should have seen the other girls, too. I couldn’t have been a judge, that’s for sure.)
The girls brother-from-another-mother came to cheer them on. I don’t think he enjoyed the pageant very much, but it was so sweet of him to want to go watch the girls.
On Saturday night, we went back to watch the high school girls in their Miss Rebel beauty pageant. Libby was so funny–we have known Macie for years, but when Macie was on stage, Libby whispered to me “That’s my pen pal!”
Our gorgeous niece, Gabby, received second alternate at Miss Rebel 2016. I definitely can see this girl walking the catwalk one day–she is so confident and any modeling company would be lucky to have her.
If there is a lesson to be learned from this post, it is that beauty pageants are so much fun. But that’s it–it doesn’t determine your beauty or your worth. And win or lose, enjoy your night 🙂
